The Microinsurance Catastrophe Risk Organisation SCC (MiCRO) is a licensed reinsurance company committed to developing and implementing insurance solutions targeted at vulnerable low-income individuals. As a social enterprise, it focuses on the development and sale of insurance products that protect against natural perils like earthquakes, droughts, and excess rain, with clear social benefits to its users.

MiCRO is working together with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Inter-American Development Bank / Multilateral Investment Fund (IDB/MIF) to expand the offering of index insurance products to cover vulnerable low-income populations against natural disasters. MiCRO is in the third year of operations within Central America, the largest focus currently being in Guatemala and El Salvador. In November 2016, MiCRO launched its first index insurance product in the region through local partners.

MiCRO designed and developed a Calculation Platform to process remote sensing data from agencies such as NASA, the Ministry of Environment of El Salvador (MARN) and USGS to detect events that trigger insurance payouts due to drought, excess rain and/or earthquake. These analyses are done by comparing predefined triggers against the data extracted from NASA, MARN and USGS via an API for each of the perils covered. The Calculation Application is uploaded as a Linux application into a web server and bundled with other processes that builds MiCAPP (MiCRO Calculation Application) to ensure data capturing, processing, storing and publishing (see workflow chart in document attached).

MiCRO is hiring the services of an independent company or individual consultant to review and propose improvements for our in-house software platform and to ensure that processes and policies are adequate to comply with insurance software platform audits and current market IT risk certifications. The selected vendor or consultant will also assist MiCAPP’s team in proper documentation of all system processes for audit compliance, which would include assistance in the composing of proper policies and procedures.
