Andrea is MiCRO’s Head of Regulatory Affairs and Consumer Protection for Central America. She is a Colombian qualified lawyer specialized in Insurance Law and International Economic Law in Colombia (Universidad Javeriana) and France (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), with an emphasis on development and human rights. Andrea has more than 14 years’ experience in insurance and 8 years’ experience in the microinsurance sector. Prior to joining MiCRO, Andrea distinguished herself as one of the global leaders in advisory and diagnostics of microinsurance around the world through consultancy work and academic research.
Andrea is skilled at providing high-quality diagnostics in microinsurance and advising supervisory authorities, regulators and policymakers in relation to promoting “best practices” to facilitate the development and the implementation of microinsurance products whilst ensuring that microinsurance consumers are effectively protected.
After 5 years of experience in a Colombian law firm specialised in Insurance Law, Andrea continued her professional career as an associate in the international arbitration team in one of the five most important law firms in the world – Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. In recent years, Andrea has undertaken several consultancies on microinsurance for the Access to Insurance Initiative, and international development agencies, such as IADB/FOMIN, USAID, and the GIZ.
Andrea is currently finalising her PhD on consumer protection in microinsurance at the Paris Dauphine University. In 2012, she presented the findings of her PhD at the first Research Conference on Microinsurance in the Netherlands and also at the first meeting of the Financial Inclusion Sub-Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS). The ILO Microinsurance Innovation Facility published her paper in 2012. The paper summarizes the findings of her research (Research Paper N.27). Andrea currently forms part of the Drafting Group on Market Conduct and Consumer Protection of the IAIS. Andrea is fluent in Spanish, English and French, intermediate in Italian and is learning Portuguese.BACK TO ALL BIOS
